went absolutely wild. take a look. several hundred people packed pete's tavern across from at&t park to watch the championship game. the game came down to the wire. fans were relieved that the falcons were not able to score in the last minute of the fourth quarter. this is an incredible last few months with the giants winning the world series back in october and now the 49ers are on their way to the super bowl. >> last year they couldn't do it. this year we did it. >> coming all the way back. >> niners! >> i never doubted it. my team is good on the road. i knew we'd do it. no problems. our defense is tight. our offense is tight. we did it. we pulled it off. go niners! >> i'm so glad the niners won. i'm ready to party all night.

>> reporter: it's sure a lot of people will be out celebrating in the city tonight. our chopper was up over the mission district a short time ago where fans are gathering along the squawidewalks. no major problems to report. remember, there was a lot of celebrating when the giants won the world series and even vi leps and vandalism. so police are out in force tonight trying to prevent any problems. one last thing i wanted to share with you. newly elected bay area congressman just tweeted a photo of himself and ed lee celebrating the 49ers' victory this afternoon. you can see the mayor has his hands up in the air there. lee is in the nation's capitol for the conference of mayors and the president's inauguration. it's sure to say there are a lot of very happy fans back here at home. live in san francisco, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> great day for the niners. talk about a comeback victory, henry wofford of comcast sports

net joins us now. that was quite an ending. >> reporter: very exciting for sure. the niners have a handful of super bowl championships. now they're a victory away of doing it again. going for their sixth title in two weeks when they battle in super bowl xlvii in new orleans. 49ers trailed by 17 points in the first half. second half, frank gore gets his second touchdown of the game. nine-yard run. with the game on the line, fourth and four, it's not going to happen for the dirty birds of the south. they get the loss, and san francisco wins 28-24. they head to new orleans. we have been on this story since week one. mindy bach has the latest on the niners. mindy? >> reporter: henry, this win was unlike any other for the 49ers this season. 17-point deficit they overcame, largest comeback by far of the year. they also broke a five-game losing streak on the road in the

analysis of today's game, plus photos and more interviews. happening right now, take a look at this. an inaugural reception getting under way in washington, d.c. if you can see in the crowds there, president obama is just arriving. he looks pretty happy, shaking some hands, making people happy there. the president and vice president are both scheduled to speak tonight at the event of the national building museum in washington, d.c. the day began with the official swearing in ceremony. maybe that's why he looks so relieved and the crowds are already gathering for tomorrow's public inauguration at the capitol. steve handelsman is at the white house. even though this event won't be nearly as big as four years ago, about 4 million people are expected? >> reporter: nearly 800,000. of course, barack obama's in a good mood. not only won reelection, he never has to run for reelection, or for anything in this country. where doing that is so tough. gives his inaugural address

stand-ins helping set camera angles today. pennsylvania avenue is set for the inaugural parade, delayed like the capitol ceremony because they're never held on a sunday. police from around the nation will bolster security, grass protectors are down on the mall. the weather's mild. 800,000 people expected tomorrow. some saw the president today. when the obamas attended church. >> he started leaning over to us and we saw him. we were so excited to see him. >> reporter: the commander in chief laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns, a reminder of his burden, and of our two centuries of democracy. the inauguration is not just an obama party. >> whether you agree with the president or not, we have freedom to be a part of it. >> reporter: and the celebration of america is on.

monster waves lured pro surchers from around the world. they competed today in the mavericks international surf

competition. the waves were not quite as big as expected, but they still reached about 25 feet. nbc bay area's kimberly tere's near pillar point and the new ways the fans watched the action this year. hello, kimberly. >> reporter: hello, diane. as you know, mavericks relies very heavily on mother nature cooperating. and this is the first time in three years that competition was allowed to move forward. and surfers and fans were ready for it. three days ago the call went out. nearly two dozen of the world's best surfers answered. just before 8:00 this morning, the famed mavericks international surf competition was under way. >> this is a pretty big deal to fall on a sunday and the weather's beautiful. the surf is up. yeah, it will be cool. >> reporter: this year's winner, peter's mel. the first win for the santa cruz native who has been chasing the title for nearly a decade. they were challenged by we was that reached up to 25 feet.

the same conditions that make for awe-inspiring curls for the pros present a serious danger to beachgoers. 2010 a rogue wave slammed into a crowd injuring dozens of people and the rules for mavericks changed. for the first time spectators were banned from the beach and bluffs. >> you want to get out there and see it right in front of you. >> it's a bummer we can't be on the beach. but it's still fun to be in the atmosphere of it. all around, people that want to watch it. >> reporter: 16,000 fans packed into the pillar point harbor to be part of the action. tickets were sold out a half hour into the competition. >> watching it on the jumbotron, it's not exactly the same, but hey, it's here, it's mavericks, it's how you need to see it. make the best out of it and enjoy it for what it is. >> they call it the super bowl of surfing. kind of nice to be here and part of it. >> reporter: as we've mentioned, many expected those waves to be at least 30 feet today. they fell short.

[ traffic passing ] ♪ [ music box: lullaby ] [ man on tv, indistinct ] ♪ [ lullaby continues ] [ baby coos ] [ man announcing ] millions are still exposed to the dangers... of secondhand smoke... and some of them can't do anything about it. ♪ [ continues ] [ gasping ] in san leandro, police are searching for as many as seven people in the deadly shooting at the b.a.r.t. station. two groups of people started shooting at each other and bus stop areas at the station yesterday afternoon. the man in his 40s who was killed we're told was an innocent bystander caught in the cross fire. a woman was also dprazed by a bullet and taken to the hospital. investigators found evidence at

nearby homes but would not elaborate on exactly what they found. so far, only one arrest has been made. a 16-year-old boy detained shortly after the shooting. two men from san francisco died in hawaii in rough surf this weekend. crews say 46-year-old adam griffith and 49-year-old adam baker drowned. they went climbing on a rocky coastal area when a wave pulled one of the men out to sea. the other reportedly jumped in to try to save him. and they both drowned. crews recovered griffith's body this morning. they're still searching for baker's body. health care leaders have been urging everyone to get a flu shot for months. but it turns out in california, only about 60% of health care workers have been vaccinated. that's according to the california department of public health. some of the industries think the shot should be required, while others point out there are some good reasons not to get vaccinated. >> some people are allergic to eggs. you can't take it if you're

allergic to eggs. some people have different religious beliefs. some people think that they're going to get the flu either way, or it's going to lower their immunity so they will get some kind of flu. but i think it's really important. >> this year the effectiveness of the flu shot is estimated at about 60%. right now, rod mayeda, a sunny, beautiful, spectacular day around the bay area. >> it was. on the coast, numbers like 76 degrees around santa cruz earlier. calling in 64 degrees there. 66 in morgan hill. oakland up to 69 degrees. offshore breezes, the air warms up and drys out as it drops down in elevation. we see that going from the mid-60s in the hills, mid-70s as the air heads up to the beaches around santa cruz. 40s and 50s right now. possible for patchy frost

cast is showing you hour by hour really no clouds. very unusual to see that this time in january. for the morning, you'll see low 30s, maybe patches of frost toward contra costa county in toward the delta fairfield. mild for san francisco, in the low 40s. 37 tomorrow morning in oakland. the afternoon looking nice. low 70s for another day. we think around santa cruz, 66. mid to upper 60s possible for another day around morgan hill, and areas south of san jose. 65 in pleasanton. about 63 in san francisco. 64 in santa rosa. the first two days of the week will be the warmest days. then come wednesday, a few extra clouds. at least the mornings not quite as cold. we could see a few showers, especially for the north bay. thursday and friday look dry. unfortunately for your weekend plans, looks like next weekend will be the best bet of seeing rain and some fresh snow. it has been a little while. we've been in the mid-winter dry spells.
